Introduction

Regardless of our individual differences, one universal unifier is that we all have a set of goals we’d like to achieve.

Whether it’s creating a business, writing a book, improving our physical health, raising a family, practicing code, learning an instrument, or anything else from the infinite list of goals.

Often, we ourselves know exactly what we need to do to achieve these goals and have fulfilling days, but lack the discipline or organization to maintain the consistency required to make the progress we desire.

For more complex projects, we may know a good first step but not step 50, causing a state of paralyzing over-analysis. In these cases, it’s almost certainly better to just complete step one, re-evaluate, and proceed to step two in a perpetual iterative cycle of learning and action.

There are many published works in the productivity space to address these common barriers. “Atomic Habits” by James Clear, “Building a Second Brain” by Tiago Forte, and “Slow Productivity” by Cal Newport offer brilliant ideas for maintaining the consistency required to achieve our goals, and for leveraging technology to organize them.

Although they offer many practical strategies, they are fundamentally providing theory. It’s a common pitfall to constantly learn theory by reading books and watching videos, but fail to take action in daily life.

Obsidian Practical Productivity (OPP) takes a different approach. It consolidates these theoretical ideas into software that can be downloaded on your computer or phone. It’s set up to track your habits, plan (and finish!) your projects, organize your responsibilities, capture new ideas in notes, and record your progress for the long term.

This is the system I’ve converged on after years of trying note taking apps, reading productivity books, and watching productivity videos.

For evidence, I’ve made major progress in my personal goals of selling completed code products to the world, reaching my fitness goals, and becoming better at guitar.

These goals hazily existed in my head, but time would pass and progress wouldn’t happen. This was really frustrating. The antidote wasn’t trying super hard, but to break these problems down into manageable chunks of work, create a habit of completing one chunk per day, and periodically tracking to create a tangible record of my work over time.

Results don’t usually manifest from bursts of energy or motivation, but from consistent effort over weeks, months, and years.

OPP can be seen as an Operating System for your life, built with the understanding that life can be challenging, but by enforcing some strict habits alongside well thought out systems, your goals can be reached.

Don’t be mistaken, some discipline is required. But OPP encourages you start with small goals like “10 Pushups Per Day”, and incorporate more ambitious goals as you become more capable and confident.

In fact, it’s an addictive process. The feeling of going to sleep knowing you showed up and did something valuable, but with a broader understanding that seemingly small tasks put you on the path to more intimidating goals, is simultaneously calming and inspiring.

OPP is my way of sharing this process. Regardless of what your specific goals may be, I’m confident OPP can share this feeling of going to sleep as someone who makes progress, which will compound into making your ambitious goals a reality.
